TECUMSEH – Candidates in Oklahoma’s most crowded congressional primary are pushing the limits of conservative Republican ideas as they campaign in the wide-open 5th Congressional District.
Seven candidates are seeking the GOP nomination in Tuesday’s primary for the seat being vacated by two-term Republican Rep. Mary Fallin, who is running for governor. They include a group of political veterans as well as some new faces, including one using a traditional evangelical message to appeal to voters.
The candidates are former Christian youth camp director James Lankford, former state Rep. Kevin Calvey, state Rep. Mike Thompson, businessmen Harry Johnson and Rick Flanigan, Dr. Johnny Roy and state Rep. Shane Jett. A runoff in the competitive race, if necessary, will be conducted on Aug. 24.
The Republican nominee will meet the winner of the Democratic primary between former University of Central Oklahoma professor Tom Guild and attorney Billy Coyle, as well as two independent candidates, Clark Duffe and Dave White, in the Nov. 2 general election... FULL ARTICLE
