Reading "Many 'special interests' benefit from tax breaks" (Our Views, Oct. 15) reminded me of Midas, the fictional king who wanted more gold. When his wish was granted, he found he needed more than gold. Consider the state agencies that directly or indirectly support the schools in their efforts to educate children. The schools need the Department of Human Services to respond when they report abuse or neglect of their students. They need the Department of Corrections to rehabilitate incarcerated mothers and fathers of Oklahoma students.

The schools need the Department of Health to provide services that contribute to the physical and mental health of children. What good will it do for schools to have new books and equipment, state-of-the-art technology and high-paid teachers, if other state agency budgets are cut to make that happen? Although there is much work to be done in improving these services, State Question 744 isn't the answer. Remember King Midas. He got his wish for more gold but it robbed him of his most prized possession, his child.
Don't forget about the children. Vote no on SQ 744.
