OKLAHOMA CITY - The state's nominees for governor appealed to municipalities Wednesday, saying that they understand the needs and concerns of local governments.
Lt. Gov. Jari Askins, a Democrat, and U.S. Rep. Mary Fallin, a Republican, spoke during a gubernatorial forum at the Oklahoma Municipal League's annual conference. Voters will decide between the two Nov. 2.
Askins said she has been a city attorney for two small towns and a municipal judge. That allowed her to see and understand the struggles that towns had on matters that ranged from ensuring that water systems met standards to finding funds for a police officer, she said.
As a state representative, she served on the House's County and Municipal Government Committee.
For Oklahoma to be strong, Oklahoma City and Tulsa need to be strong because they are the economic engines that drive the state, Askins said... FULL ARTICLE
