Amid his own campaign, state Auditor and Inspector Steve Burrage has some advice for the next state schools superintendent: Order an expansive, independent review of common education in Oklahoma, ranging from the operations at the state Education Department to administrative costs at local school districts.
That seems wise counsel from a man who has had a frequent close-up look at the sometimes dysfunctional state of school operations and finances. The timing is right with the impending change of leadership at the education department. Superintendent Sandy Garrett chose not to seek re-election after two decades on the job.
An audit's purpose isn't always to turn up wrongdoing. Burrage said a "full-blown performance audit" conducted either by the state auditor's office or with the help of an outside firm would help whichever candidate succeeds Garrett. Republican Janet Barresi will face Sen. Susan Paddack, a Democrat, on Nov. 2. Neither has experience akin to running a state agency that receives the largest portion of the state's budget...
