Holiday shoppers and construction lead to gridlock

OKLAHOMA CITY -- As the holidays draw closer, traffic is building around malls and shopping centers. But while the kiddos might be dreaming of a white Christmas, parents are having nightmares of traffic turmoil near one popular and busy metro retail area. Driver Debra Woody says, "That's like 30 minutes from Classen to get to Penn Square, that was on a Sunday." Traffic tie ups have become a familiar occurrence for those driving along I-44 at the Belle Isle bridge, between Penn and Western.
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation says the work is part of a bridge rehabilitation project.
They're trying to prevent big problems before they happen.
Mills Gotcher with ODOT says, "Basic pothole patching, some striping, guardrail repair. Pretty basic maintenance work."
The work is not only causing congestion on the Belle Isle bridge; at any given time, there are lane closures and ramp closures along Northwest Expressway as well... FULL ARTICLE AND WATCH VIDEO
