Better roads and bridges are worth the cost (EDITORIAL)

The local news is full of reports about road and bridge work, detours and travel delays.

What these stories fail to mention is the old saw "temporary inconvenience, permanent improvement." And what most of us fail to realize is that the Pocono area, the state and indeed the nation alike need more of these irksome road and bridge projects, not fewer. A strong, functioning transportation system is essential to a thriving economy.

This sprawling nation once had an infrastructure that was the envy of the world: cross-country railroads, booming air traffic and, of course, our then-unprecedented interstate highway system. This integrated network enabled the fast movement of people and goods and helped our economy expand even while knitting it together.

This transportation infrastructure lets diners in Oklahoma enjoy Maine lobsters or East Coast residents prepare a lettuce salad, with tomatoes, 12 months a year. This transit network allows online businesses like Amazon to serve shoppers anywhere who click a few buttons, then receive their chosen goods within a few short days, all without ever leaving home...
