NORMAN — If construction goes as planned, eight intersections along state Highway 9 from 24th Avenue Southwest to 24th Avenue Southeast will have bicycle and pedestrian crossings by the end of the year.
Norman Public Works Director Shawn O’Leary said the project resulted from a grant from the Association of Central Oklahoma Governments (ACOG). The city submitted the grant in November 2009. It was approved about a year ago.
“We applied to ACOG for transportation safety funds,” O’Leary said. “They are 100 percent funded.”
O’Leary estimated the project will cost about $500,000.
“We will have pedestrian-friendly intersections there,” he said. “As a highway, it really never was designed for that use.”
