Boulevard estimated impact falls short, but change is coming

A weekend social media post by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation crediting creation of the Oklahoma City Boulevard with prompting $1 billion in public and private investment drew challenges and requests that the data behind that figure be detailed.

Indeed, at first glance, I too struggled to come to the same conclusion. But after visiting with folks at the Transportation Department, their approach comes clear — but might still be questionable.

Let’s put together their list. The boulevard itself, in total, cost $120 million. That is a part of their calculation.

They are including the $139 million Scissortail Park, of which the 40-acre upper section is now open but construction has yet to start on the lower 30 acres. And yes, the park was a part of the mitigation plan for moving Interstate 40 a few blocks south. It was indeed prompted by the boulevard... FULL ARTICLE
