GARVIN COUNTY, OK -- Whenever a bridge closes for repair, it causes major headaches for those who live around it. That is the situation in Garvin County where a closed bridge is forcing many motorists miles out of their way. It is one of many Oklahoma bridges that are up for repair. One by one, drivers unexpectedly drove up on to a closed road sign and are forced to turn around and find another way to get where they are going.
"I'm on my way home right now," Ossie Fuston said.
They are not only finding new directions but carving out more time to get there.
"Probably about 45 minutes," Phillip Galavis said.
It may be backtracking motorists, but hopefully preventing the Oklahoma Department of Transportation from having to backtrack from something much more serious.
After the 2007 Minnesota bridge collapse, state officials say a lot of scrutiny was placed on bridge designs, especially "truss" bridges; statewide there are about 95 of them.
