Cable barriers in the median of divided highways throughout the state, officials say, are helping to prevent deadly crashes.
The barriers — wire cables staked up in the grassy median — prevent vehicles from crossing the median and slamming head-on into oncoming traffic.
Oklahoma uses cable barriers more than most states, with nearly 450 miles of roadway equipped with barriers to prevent crossover accidents, said Terri Angier, spokeswoman for the state Transportation Department.
Nearly 80 miles of barrier projects were approved by the Transportation Commission on Tuesday as part of an eight-year plan to improve Oklahoma's roads.
