Cable barriers will be installed along the busiest section of the John Kilpatrick Turnpike to improve motorist safety until the roadway can be expanded from four to six lanes.
The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority on Thursday approved a $370,768 contract to Midstate Traffic to install six miles of cable barriers from MacArthur Boulevard to Eastern Avenue.
The Turnpike Authority also approved a $456,648 contract to Midstate Traffic to install six miles of cable barriers on the Creek Turnpike from U.S. 75 to Memorial Drive. That section of the Creek Turnpike also is being considered to be widened from four to six lanes.
“Putting the cable barrier up is a stopgap measure between now and the time that we are actually able to do the expansion,” said Gary Ridley, director of the Turnpike Authority. “If we were to decide today that we wanted to make that expansion and had the funding solution for it, it would take at least eight to 12 months to design it and then another year and a half to build. So you're looking about a three-year period.” FULL ARTICLE
