Census shows growth in Oklahoma, but no new congressional seats

Oklahoma's population grew by 300,697 people from 2000 to 2010, according to new U.S. Census Bureau data.

According to the Census, Oklahoma was home to 3,450,654 people in 2000. That number grew to 3,751,351 in 2010.

Despite the increase, Oklahoma's number of representatives in Congress will remain at five, where it's been since 2000.

The number of Oklahoma congress members has either declined or stayed the same since 1930, when nine legislators represented the state in the U.S. House of Representatives. Oklahoma went from six House seats to five in 2000.

"Everybody's projections were pretty much on mark," said Keith Gaddie, political science professor at the University of Oklahoma. "This is part of an ongoing, century-long track of the movement of population."

Tuesday's data release is the first of several that will eventually map the makeup of the entire country, down to a single block.

As expected, Western states continued to post the most growth, though at a much slower rate than in previous decades, data show. Nevada's population, for instance, grew by 35.1 percent from 2000 to 2010. Its average growth rate from 1960 to 2000 was 66 percent... FULL ARTICLE
