Construction to start on Tulsa’s first modern roundabout

TULSA – Tulsa is building a modern roundabout to be completed early next year, joining a trend that is spreading across the U.S.
Later this year, street crews will start to install the roundabout at 10th Street and Elgin Avenue.
The modern roundabout eliminates traffic lights at an intersection. Roundabouts cut down the potential for accidents, a study shows, and reduce the number of crashes and injuries dramatically.
A roundabout is a circular intersection that is larger than a traffic circle, such as the one at Fifth and Main streets or at 36th Street and Hudson Avenue, but smaller than a rotary, such as the one at Admiral Place and Mingo Road, said Lara Christiansen, city of Tulsa spokeswoman.
Artwork is planned for the center island of the roundabout, she said.
The roundabout is part of a three-intersection, $2.6 million project. The city of Tulsa has contracted with Pavement Conservation Specialists Inc. to reconstruct 11th Street and Peoria Avenue, Sixth Street and Peoria Avenue and the roundabout... FULL ARTICLE
