SHAWNEE, Okla.
— As Oklahoma Natural Gas contractors from B&H Construction near completion of about 6,200 feet of plastic pipe installation along Kickapoo Street, the city has just begun in terms of paying for the complete street widening project.

John Krywicki, Shawnee city engineer, said about $1.3 million from the Kickapoo Street widening account has been used for the beginning stages of the $9.5 million to $10 million project.

“We’ve spent $1,007,500 on right of way acquisitions just to property owners,” he said.

Still, Krywicki said there is more than $3 million that remains in the account for use on the project.

So far, all of the money spent toward preparing the roadway for paving — which Krywicki said he hopes will begin in late spring or shortly after — has been paid by the city. Money from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, as well as federal money for the project, will not be received until construction begins, he said.

“The federal money [former U.S. Rep. Ernest] Istook got for us is still there,” Krywicki said. “The federal earmarked money — $970,000 — is counted as ours. ODOT will administer it but it will count as part of the city’s share of the project.” FULL ARTICLE
