SHAWNEE, Okla. — City engineers are in the process of finalizing plans for a sidewalk addition that will run from Shawnee Middle School to a nearby apartment complex, with a crossing zone on 45th street.
“A sidewalk anywhere is great,” Ricky Unrah, from Shawnee, said. Unrah’s daughter Alexyss added “As long as it’s safe for kids.”
Shawnee City Engineer John Krywicki said the preliminary design had been submitted and approved by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, and will have partial funding from a $60,000 ODOT grant.
“The design is about 95 percent complete,” Krywicki said. “Right now we are waiting on the school to do the educational component of this plan.”
Krywicki said the sidewalk is part of a larger initiative by the city to increase the number of sidewalks and repair and widen busy roads.
“Shawnee needs sidewalks,” Nick Oxford, student from Oklahoma Baptist University, said. “There is no good way to get around Shawnee since there is no public transportation. You always see people walking on busy roads like Kickapoo and Harrison.”
Krywicki said the city was currently taking inventory of existing sidewalks and potential areas in need of sidewalks... FULL ARTICLE
