The rich, famous and the not-so-famous have given a collective $24 million to state political campaigns this election year, a Tulsa World analysis of Oklahoma Ethics Commission data shows.

In all, candidates have reported receiving funds from more than 40,000 contributors, including an energy company executive who has spread $86,000 among various campaigns to two ministers who each gave $50 to the state's gubernatorial nominees.

With 23 days until the Nov. 2 general election, one thing is certain, experts say: Most candidates should have collected far more than half of the funds they need to finish their campaigns.

The $24 million contributed so far exceeds the $19 million collected by state candidates during the entire 2008 political campaign.

The World's analysis is based on Ethics Commission filings that reflect reported contributions received before Aug. 10. Campaigns that received funds after Aug. 9 will begin reporting that activity Oct. 19.
