OKLAHOMA CITY — Nearly 2,000 steel beams from the elevated portion of Interstate 40 in downtown Oklahoma City will be donated after the aging structure is disassembled, transportation officials said.
Part of the $12.4 million contract calls for salvaging as many as 1,800 of the nearly 1,900 steel beams under the deck of the Crosstown highway. Beams will be inspected, and those deemed safe will be made available at no cost to counties, officials said.
"We think that's a great deal for the taxpayers," Deputy Transportation Department Director Gary Evans said. "It's a great deal to re-task those beams. It shows how state government and county government can work together.
"We never have had in the past the opportunity on this large a scale to be able to do something like this." FULL ARTICLE
