Crossover fatalities decline

NORMAN — Red River Rivalry is less than two weeks away.

As motorists drive south on Interstate 35 to Dallas to watch the Oklahoma Sooners battle the Texas Longhorns, drivers will see cable fences in the highway median.

Oklahoma Department of Transportation spokesman David Meuser said cable barriers were introduced to the United States in 2001 when workers installed them along the Lake Hefner Parkway in Oklahoma City. The fences were placed to prevent vehicles from crossing over into traffic lanes.

ODOT officials were impressed with the results. Therefore, more cable fences were placed in highway medians.

Meuser said the barriers were put in along I-35 south of Norman in 2004. ODOT has seen a reduction in fatalities associated with crossover head-on crashes.

“From 2003 to 2007, we averaged 29 crossover fatalities on Oklahoma highways,” he said... FULL ARTICLE
