SHAWNEE, Okla. -- Drivers traveling Interstate 40 may need to take a detour through the Shawnee area while crews repair part of a damaged bridge.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, I-40 westbound at mile marker 181 is down to one lane and the ramp from northbound State Highway 177 to westbound I-40 has been closed. Traffic is moving slowly and officials said drivers should be aware of construction crews and blocked lanes.

According to officials at the scene, a damaged expansion joint was sticking straight up in the roadway causing a hazard for drivers. At least two vehicles hit the piece of metal, causing their tires to blow out. No one was injured in either incident.
