Democrats hope to snag Dist. 5

OKLAHOMA CITY – It’s been 36 years since a Democrat was last elected to the U.S. House in Oklahoma’s 5th District, but two energized candidates and the shifting demographics in the urban district are giving Democrats some hope at winning the seat in November.

Several contenders in the seven-deep Republican field already had their political campaigns in full swing by the end of 2009, but an ex-Marine and a longtime college professor emerged for the Democrats a few months before the early June filing period.

Retired Oklahoma City University professor Tom Guild, 56, who taught political science and legal studies for 27 years, will face former Marine and criminal defense attorney Billy Coyle, 35, in Tuesday’s Democratic primary.
