Oklahoma Department of Transportation officials closed the westbound Interstate 244 bridge over the Arkansas River this weekend and shifted all traffic to the bridge's eastbound counterpart.
State contractors will now begin demolishing the westbound bridge, likely by using a gigantic jackhammer-like machine. In its place will be created a $64 million, double-decker, multimodal span consisting of three lanes of through traffic over two rail lines and a pedestrian walkway.
"It's pretty advanced, forward thinking," said Randle White, ODOT engineer for the Tulsa County area.
White said the eastbound bridge will carry traffic in both directions until the project's completion in 2013.
