The two women running for governor may not agree on philosophy or politics, but they do agree on one thing: If voters approve State Question 744 on Nov. 2, the impact on state government services will be deep and painful.

I suspect that neither actually knows exactly how deep or painful. If they did, they might back out of their campaigns.

Regardless of whether voters elect Lt. Gov. Jari Askins or U.S. Rep. Mary Fallin to be the state's next chief executive, if SQ 744 passes the next governor's term in office will be completely overshadowed by the ongoing funding crisis the initiative petition will create.

It will so dominate the machinery of state government that nothing in the candidates' platforms will ever get any political air.

In case you haven't heard of it, SQ 744 would constitutionally mandate that the state spend at least as much on public schools as the surrounding states do. Currently, Oklahoma is last among those states... FULL ARTICLE
