District 5 hopefuls speak at forum

EDMOND – Seven of the 11 men running for the state’s 5th Congressional District sought to paint themselves as the most conservative Republican candidate.

Two others wanted the audience to know they were Democrats, while the remaining pair pushed the fact they were running as Independents.

Speaking at a candidate forum on the campus of Oklahoma Christian University, Independents Clark Duffe and David White joined Democrats Billy Coyle and Tom Guild and Republicans James Lankford, Kevin Calvey, state Rep. Mike Thompson, Harry Johnson, Rick Flanigan, Johnny B. Roy and state Rep. Shane Jett in a 90-minute discussion about state and federal issues.

And each man agreed the economy was in trouble.

“The economy is in an absolute shambles,” said Calvey. “I blame Obama. Bailouts and stimulus packages don’t work. Cutting spending is the absolute way to fix this.”
