Monday the Oklahoma Transportation Commission approved moving forward with plans for a double decker multi-use bridge.
The multi-use bridge would replace the current westbound I-244 bridge over the Arkansas River. It would be the first bridge of its kind in the state.
Plans call for traffic to go on top of the bridge. Walking and bicycle paths would travel along rail lines below. Oklahoma Department of Transportation Engineers say the bridge needs to be replaced.
The project is estimated to cost $87-million and will likely be paid for with grants and federal funds. Current plans call for construction to begin in the spring and to finish in the fall of 2012.
The Oklahoma Transportation Commission approved a contract to Manhattan Road and Bridge Co. on Monday to replace this structurally deficient bridge with a double-decker bridge.
