Ethics Commission director: Donation supporting SQ 744 not illegal

OKLAHOMA CITY
– A $1.74 million contribution from the National Education Association to a campaign supporting State Question 744 was not illegal, the executive director of the Oklahoma Ethics Commission said Monday.

Despite calls by an opposition group for the contribution to be returned, OEC Executive Director Marilyn Hughes said the NEA’s contribution was legal.

“Under the Supreme Court ruling, any contribution from anyone is not illegal,” Hughes said. “Anyone can give any amount as long as it’s disclosed.”

Recently the One Oklahoma Coalition called upon the Yes on 744 campaign to “come into compliance with state ethics law” and return $1.74 million in contributions from the National Education Association.
