Existing Oklahoma projects got stimulus

Some grant recipient programs called ‘silly’ in McCain, Coburn review of government spending

WASHINGTON — In a report naming "silly and shortsighted” stimulus projects, Sens. Tom Coburn and John McCain last week cited some scientific research that had received funding, including two projects at Oklahoma universities.

But those projects had been rated highly at the National Science Foundation, which awarded the grants for the research.

Coburn and McCain also took issue with an Oklahoma City boat cruise service getting stimulus dollars. But a spokesman for the transit agency that includes the boat service said the project was worthy and totally qualified for funding under stimulus guidelines.
