IN the not-too-distant past, members of the two political parties at the Legislature found enough common ground to approve bond issues for such things as transportation projects and higher ed improvements. More of that collaboration is needed now.
But many members in the Republican-controlled House have made it clear they want nothing to do with increasing the state's bonded indebtedness. So potential bond issues are dead on arrival — even if they're badly needed and make good fiscal sense.
The need is great for improvements to the state Capitol building, which literally has pieces falling away. The need for a new office for the state medical examiner can't be overstated — the current facility contributed to the embarrassment of the office losing its national accreditation. A new building for the state Veterans Affairs Department has been on the to-do list for years.
All three projects, and potentially others, go wanting because of one bloc's disdain for the idea of increasing bonded indebtedness... FULL ARTICLE
