Former state lawmaker in lead for 5th District seat, poll shows

U.S. Rep. Mary Fallin chose not to seek re-election to run for governor.

OKLAHOMA CITY
— A recent SoonerPoll puts former state Rep. Kevin Calvey ahead in a field of seven Republicans vying to replace U.S. Rep. Mary Fallin.

In a telephone poll of 306 likely voters in the Republican primary for the 5th Congressional District, Calvey garnered 27.8 percent support, followed by political newcomer James Lankford, with 19.9 percent.

"We don't put all our faith in polls or anything like that, but it is nice to have some acknowledgement that we are in the lead," said Calvey, a former lawmaker from Del City.

"We are very encouraged by the response we are seeing as we go out and campaign."

Lankford, who served as director of the Falls Creek Youth Camp from 1996 until 2009, said his campaign has great momentum.

Rep. Mike Thompson, R-Oklahoma City, who an earlier SoonerPoll showed in second place, was in third this time with support from 14.1 percent of respondents... FULL ARTICLE
