SQ 744 to raise political cacophony

Get ready for the robo-calls. Get ready for the half-true TV commercials. Get ready for a political blitz like Oklahoma has never seen before.
The National Education Association — the nation's largest teachers union — has donated $3 million to the campaign to convince Oklahomans to vote for State Question 744.
SQ 744 is a ravenous wolf in school teacher's clothing. It would require the state to spend, at a minimum, as much on education as the surrounding states do on a per-pupil basis.
While the Tulsa World absolutely supports the goal of raising the amount of money the state spends on education and thinks the regional average is a good benchmark, cementing that standard within the state Constitution is a foolish and dangerous effort.
Doing so abandons Oklahoma's sovereignty over its own state budget. It allows the lobbyists and lawmakers in Austin, Texas, and Topeka, Kan., to set Oklahoma's spending priorities... FULL ARTICLE
