OKLAHOMA
CITY Republican gubernatorial candidate Randy Brogdon called Thursday
for restricting the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority's ability to raise
tolls.
"Hiking tolls when people are struggling to make ends meet will only
make things worse," Brogdon said in a statement released through the
state Senate press office.
"Oklahoma's citizens and businesses are facing economic
uncertainty. This is not the time to add to their financial burden
through a decision that was essentially taxation without
representation."
Brogdon, a state senator from Owasso, said he is planning
legislation for the next session that would prevent the Turnpike
Authority from raising tolls "without the consent of the people or
their elected representatives."
Tolls on Oklahoma turnpikes will increase by 16 percent to 30
percent Aug. 4. The increase approved last week by the Turnpike
Authority will be the first in 15 years.
