LANSING, Mich. — Gov. Jennifer Granholm supports raising Michigan's diesel fuel tax from 15 cents to 19 cents a gallon soon.
The
Senate Transportation Committee on Tuesday passed a bill to raise the
fee and use the extra revenue to repair deteriorating bridges.
Although
state transportation officials warn even more needs to be done to deal
with crumbling roads, Granholm told reporters Wednesday that she'd be
happy to start increasing transportation dollars by hiking the diesel
tax to the same level as the state gasoline tax.
She says if it's possible for the increase to get Senate and House approval in the coming week, "we should get it done now."
