Green passages: I-244 bridge debris to be recycled

TULSA – Manhattan Road and Bridge Co., dismantling the Interstate 244 bridge over the Arkansas River southwest of downtown Tulsa, is using green demolition techniques to reuse the material while working underneath the bridge.

Manhattan and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation are working closely with federal agencies like the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, ODOT spokeswoman Kenna Mitchell said.

Various environmental and storm water permits are typical on all road projects, she said.

“Besides having an environmental document approved, we have a storm water permit from DEQ and a permit from the Army Corps of Engineers, which allows us to place fill material in the river and to work in the river,” Mitchell said.

The permits are necessary to work in the Arkansas River channel, she said.

“In the removal process, concrete falls either to the ground or river below,” Mitchell said. “That debris is collected and is being recycled for the construction of a temporary work road.
