(Tulsa, Ok) -- A group opposed to State Question 744 is sounding the alarm over what might happen if voters approve the measure November 2nd. Jeff Wilson is campaign manager of the One Oklahoma Coalition.
Wilson says 744 has all kinds of unintended consequences. For example, he claims 744 could result in the elimination of $20 million in funding for juvenile facilities, leading Oklahoma's troubled youth into a lifetime of incarceration costing an annual average of $17,000. Wilson says we could also see a 40 percent increase in state income tax, and a 35 percent hike in Oklahoma sales tax if 744 is approved.
State Question 744 would amend the Oklahoma Constitution to require the legislature to fund public education to at least the per-pupil average of neighboring states.
