Heavy truck traffic demands bridge upgrades

On any workday, 300 trucks and tractor-trailer rigs cross the aging two-lane Hyde Park Avenue overpass across the Muskogee Turnpike, Port of Muskogee officials say.

Mornings are the busiest, said Josh Taylor, manager of Johnston Terminal, located on the east side of the bridge. He said traffic is especially heavy between 7 and 9 a.m.

The trucks not only go to the Johnston Terminal at the Port of Muskogee, they go to surrounding industrial plants and to the Muskogee water treatment plant.

Port of Muskogee Director Scott Robinson estimated 70,000 to 80,000 trucks a year go over the two-lane bridge.
