Add Burns Hargis and David Boren to the growing and disparate list of those concerned about what passage of State Question 744 would mean for Oklahoma's state budget. In short: It wouldn't be pretty.
Hargis and Boren, presidents of Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma respectively, said approval of SQ 744 in November would mean big cuts in programs and classes at their schools, and potentially devastating effects on other areas of the state budget. Their comments last week came one day after Gov. Brad Henry announced he would help lead the anti-744 effort. If approved, SQ 744 would require that per-pupil state funding for K-12 education meet or exceed the regional average.
Their voices join dozens of others in opposition. Business leaders, chambers of commerce and other trade groups are against it. So is the American Federation of Teachers. So are gubernatorial candidates Mary Fallin and Jari Askins, the Oklahoma Municipal League, the Oklahoma Farm Bureau, Oklahoma State Lodge Fraternal Order of Police, Oklahoma Pork Council, Oklahoma Professional Economic Development Council and Grace Living Centers...
