Highway 66 bridge set to close, construction begins

A bridge known for it's bad condition, is set to shut down. Construction started today, for a detour lane, on State Highway 66.

That bridge covers Bird Creek.

Newschannel 8's Kim Jackson witnessed exactly why the bridge is being closed.

The bridge is so bad, drivers have to drive down the middle of the road. That's because the sides have been repaired over and over again and engineers had no choice but to close it down.

Back in 1936, it was a great bridge, with two lanes. Today there is only one--the middle.

"Its gotten to the point that we have done so many repairs especially to the deck of the bridge that at this point it's just patches on top of patches out there. It really does need extensive work," said Spokesperson Kenna Mitchell, Oklahoma Department of Transpiration... FULL ARTICLE
