In a seven-year span, Oklahoma Department of Transportation has slashed the number of deficient highway bridges in the sate by about 30 percent — and those numbers only reflect what has happened through 2009.
For the past decade, Oklahomans have been hearing from highway officials about the poor conditions of bridges in the state. Only in the past five years — with a legislative emphasis on increased funding to the bridge and highway system — have highway officials been able to make any dent in the numbers.
Oklahoma has a disproportionate number of bridges that are more than 70 years old or older. In 2002, the state had 1,127 structurally deficient bridges. That number dropped to 797 in 2008... FULL ARTICLE
