Hole in I-44 has company

A second pit opens in a bridge in east Tulsa on Sunday.

Another piece of an Interstate 44 bridge in east Tulsa crumbled away Sunday, two days after a gaping 8-foot hole damaged cars and created traffic jams.

The 3-by-6 hole that opened up Sunday was a few yards west of the hole that appeared Friday morning in the right lane of westbound I-44 at 161st East Avenue. That lane and all lanes of 161st East Avenue will be closed for several days until repairs are completed and the bridge is deemed safe.

Drivers can expect long delays, according to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.

Also on Sunday night, the right lane of the eastbound bridge was closed after crews discovered an area of deteriorating pavement.

"While this section of pavement does not have a hole in the deck ... (repair) work is being done as a safety precaution," ODOT said in a news release. That closure is expected to last until sometime late Monday, the agency said... FULL ARTICLE
