House speaker withdraws agency consolidation plan

So many Oklahoma House members signed up Friday to debate against a proposal to consolidate several state agencies that Speaker Chris Benge decided against having the bill heard.

Democratic state Sen. Debbe Leftwich said she will not seek re-election after seven years in office.

Leftwich announced her decision Friday shortly after the Legislature adjourned its 2010 regular session. The Oklahoma City senator ran for the seat to fill out the unexpired term of her late husband, Keith Leftwich, who died of cancer in 2003. She was re-elected to a full four-year term in 2006 without opposition. She said she plans to spend more time with her sons and her father.

Leftwich said she's proud of her accomplishments, including bills to protect victims of domestic violence and improve access to breast and cervical cancer treatment. She also supported a graduated license program to keep teen drivers safer... FULL ARTICLE
