A few months short of the halfway point in construction of the westbound Interstate 244 bridge, the state's first multimodal, double-decker bridge is a major undertaking for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
The $64 million bridge replacement, the second-largest single project ever awarded by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, will include three lanes of vehicular traffic over two rail lines and a pedestrian walkway.
The bridge it is replacing was built in 1967 and was listed as one of Oklahoma's structurally deficient bridges.
Every day, roughly 68,000 vehicles crossed the bridge, according to transportation data.
Construction began in April and is on schedule to be completed in mid-2013, said Kenna Mitchell, spokeswoman for ODOT.
Currently, workers are pouring about 10,000 cubic yards of concrete - 2.02 million gallons - to make the bridge's piers, which will act as a foundation for the span, Mitchell said... FULL ARTICLE
