Call it a warm-up.
This weekend's periodic lane closures on the eastbound Interstate 244 bridge over the Arkansas River are only meant to prepare the area for what is to come.
Contractors for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation will be making minor repairs to help ensure that the 44-year-old span is maintenance-free during the coming $64 million project to replace the interstate's nearby westbound span. The eastbound span will carry traffic heading in both directions during much of the replacement project.
"We want to take this preemptive strike right now, get the maintenance work complete and make sure the bridge can carry the two-way traffic," said Kenna Mitchell, ODOT spokeswoman.
Mitchell said the eastbound bridge would see lane closures until 6 a.m. Monday, and periodic closures – mostly on nights and weekends – would continue until the summer... FULL ARTICLE & WATCH VIDEO
