RE: I-35 narrowed near Guthrie for flood-related repairs
Northbound I-35 will remain narrowed to one lane between Waterloo Rd. and Seward Rd. south of Guthrie until mid-August as crews repair flood-related damage to pavement and a concrete bridge-type culvert.
Drivers should expect a slight shift in the remaining northbound lane as repairs continue, however ramps will remain open.
Additionally, interactive traffic advisory signs will be put in place to provide information to motorists. Work is expected to begin at 8 p.m. tonight.
Drivers should also expect congestion, particularly in late afternoon, and locate an alternate route if possible.
At an emergency meeting earlier today, the Oklahoma Transportation Commission approved a more than $715,000 contract with Stillwater-based Wittwer Construction Co. Inc. to make the repairs. Wittwer was one of four contractors to bid on the project.
The damage resulted from soil erosion caused by an eddy, or swirling waters, from the recent storms. The structure began to settle.
The contractor will replace a 40-foot-long section of the bridge-type culvert and add structures to prevent swirling water.
About 34,000 vehicles drive north and southbound I-35 each day. The original structure was built in 1959.
