I-44 bridge work to force street closure underneath

That portion of 163rd East Avenue will be shut for this weekend as the old span is removed.

A week after it opened a portion of a new Interstate 44 bridge, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation will tear down the old span and close traffic underneath it for a couple of days.

The department will close 163rd East Avenue under the highway beginning at 5 p.m. Friday as contractors remove the old I-44 bridge's westbound lanes.

ODOT spokeswoman Kenna Mitchell said 163rd East Avenue could be closed until 5 a.m. Monday.

The department recently shifted traffic from the bridge's old westbound lanes to two newly built lanes.

Mitchell said the entrance and exit ramps will remain open even though the street will not.
