Oklahoma Department of Transportation commissioners awarded a bid Monday to replace one of the highway system's worst bridges with what will likely be one of the state's most extraordinary ones.
ODOT commissioners approved a project to replace Interstate 244's westbound Arkansas River bridge with a double-decker span that will carry vehicular, rail and passenger traffic.
Contractors will build the rail lines -- which will run on the bridge's lower level -- to accommodate high-speed rail, in case such traffic is ever needed into or out of Tulsa.
The project's construction cost totals $64 million, making it the second-largest single project the department has ever awarded.
Repaving the Inner Dispersal Loop ranked No. 1 with a $68 million contract cost.
The department was able to proceed with the I-244 bridge-replacement project thanks to a nearly $50 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grant, also known as a TIGER grant.
