Initiative petition for gross production tax hike to increase teacher pay dropped

An initiative petition to raise the gross production tax to pay for a teacher pay raise has been withdrawn by its organizers.

Mickey Thompson, executive director of Restore Oklahoma Now Inc. and a longtime oil and gas industry leader, made the surprise announcement Monday afternoon, calling on the various organizations and individuals who pledged funds to support State Question 795 to instead focus on opposing a possible veto referendum on the recently passed teacher pay raise funding package.

“We will be at the forefront of any effort to defeat a move to renege on the school/teacher funding package,” Thompson said.

Thompson said the possibility of the initiative petition alone was successful in getting lawmakers to finally reach a compromise last month that will fund teacher pay raises in years to come... FULL ARTICLE
