Effort to fund teacher pay raise with gross production tax hike can proceed

OKLAHOMA CITY — An initiative petition to raise the gross production tax to pay for a teacher pay raise can move forward, the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled Monday.

State Question 795 would require 123,725 signatures to get on the Nov. 6, 2018, ballot. It would raise the gross production tax on new wells to 7 percent from 2 percent.

If passed, it would be projected to generate $340 million, a portion of which would be used to pay for a $4,000 teacher pay raise.

It would give districts money for early childhood development and to add teachers.
