The chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee blasted the Senate jobs bill, saying the measure doesn’t have enough votes to pass the House.
Rep. James Oberstar (D-Minn.) declined to give specific numbers, but he said there are “dozens and dozens” of members who are irate about the way that the Senate bill changes the funding formulas for highway spending.
“There are not the votes to pass it right now,” he said, “so it’s got to be changed.”
The Minnesotan said he wouldn’t mind if the stimulus section in the House bill got stripped, but he said he won’t stand for a change in funding formulas as it stands. He said that the Senate bill “does violence” by giving four states – including California and Illinois – almost all the extra federal highway funds.
