Lawmakers begin redistricting task

Redrawing Oklahoma's five congressional districts should be easy, an expert says. Republicans, who added to their majority in both the House and Senate, can redraw legislative lines with little gerrymandering, he says.

Strong gains made by Republican legislators in this month's general elections, which will significantly increase their majority in both legislative chambers, should make the task of redrawing legislative and congressional districts easier, says a political-science professor who specializes in reapportionment.

Unlike 10 years ago, lawmakers won't have to wrestle with the loss of a congressional seat, which should make the redrawing of Oklahoma's five congressional districts simple, said Keith Gaddie, a University of Oklahoma professor.

Because Republicans now hold legislative seats in most of western Oklahoma and have taken over traditionally Democratic seats in the southeastern part of the state, very little if any gerrymandering should be necessary, he said... FULL ARTICLE
