TULSA - Community leaders hope a push for passenger rail will gain steam this year. The line would go from Tulsa to Oklahoma City. Advocates say the upfront cost would be offset by the benefit it would bring to communities along the tracks.
City councilor, Rick Westcott is heading up an initiative to get a passenger train to travel between Tulsa and Oklahoma City.
Friday morning, Westcott, officials from Passenger Rail Oklahoma and state legislators gathered at city hall to discuss ways to make the plan a reality.
Westcott says it would cost $26 million and the funds would have to come from the state. That's because a rail line already exists between the two cities, it just needs to be upgraded.
It's been years since residents in Ponca City have seen a passenger train make a stop. "I've had numerous requests from people of all ages to restore passenger rail to Ponca City.
