Lawmakers trade barbs over budget

OKLAHOMA CITY – Republican and Democratic lawmakers – facing a mammoth budget hole and a rapidly approaching legislative deadline – spent Wednesday accusing each other of bad sportsmanship in developing the state’s budget.

With their May 28 adjournment deadline less than two weeks away and no spending agreement announced, leaders from the Republican-controlled Senate accused Democrats of derailing budget talks. Earlier this week, the Democrats said they would vote against the emergency clause on spending bills unless their revenue-enhancement ideas were included in the budget.

Without an emergency clause, any spending measures passed by the Legislature would not go into effect for 90 days.
